Architecture Events in 2021 (Jan-Mar)

Hey guys, it’s Elif! Welcome back to our blog. For this week’s post, I’ve composed a chronological list of architecture and design events, discussions and workshops that will digitally be taking place in the near future. We will be updating this post every few weeks as more events get released, so bookmark this page or save the post to refer back to it throughout the year.

FEBRUARY

1. RIBA: People Place Planet #2: Climate Literacy for architects (18th)

This event is part of the People Place Planet programme, run by three guests, which showcases the diverse people behind great placemaking. The event focuses on climate literacy, education and upskilling architects, regardless of where they are at in their career, to help equip them with knowledge and essential tools to address the climate crisis.

You can find more information and tickets here: https://www.architecture.com/whats-on/people-place-planet-2-climate-literacy-for-architects

2. AA school - A new model for listening (18th)

This event is part of the New Models lecture series that invites practitioners like Sumayya Vallay from Counterspace, to discuss how their work can change the models around which society is organised. These discussions will address power structures, socio-economic factors and structural inequalities that exist in society today.

3. MADCon (19th - 21st)

MADCon is the world's first virtual convention for architecture students co-curated by the members of the MAD Collective. There is a schedule of different events like workshops and portfolio reviews happening across the 3 days. The convention is supported by RIBA future architects, AIA, RIAS, Museum of Architecture and the Singapore University of Technology and Design, with 20+ content creators and guests, including us! Archidabble’s event runs on the first day of MADCon as a discussion in collaboration with DiscussedIt.

4. AA School - Designing a Green New Deal (22nd)

This event is part of the lecture series that the AA School is running. The series aims to ‘bring some of the voices within and outside the design profession’ to help shed light on injustice, crises and how the question of land is woven through them.

This specific lecture by Billy Fleming is on the Green New Deal, a national climate plan and how the demands of the climate justice movement and the design professions might be aligned.

You can find more information and register to attend here: https://www.aaschool.ac.uk/publicprogramme/whatson/designing-a-green-new-deal

5. ‘Revealing the city’ - FutureWork (23rd)

This lecture series, by City Architecture Forum, explores some of the most exciting developments happening in the City of London. The online event by Fletcher Priest’s FutureWork looks at the workplace and how we might work in the future.

6. Project Showcase: Building hospitals with a shift in perspective (25th)

This talk is run by New London Architecture, where they are going to present some of the most recent hospital builds in the healthcare sector. This event sparks my interest especially with the current COVID-19 pandemic that is going on and the reliance we have on hospitals.

MARCH

1. AA School - Designing the Half-Earth (1st)

This event is part of the lecture series that the AA School is running. The series aims to bring some of the voices within and outside the design profession to help shed light on injustice, crises and how the question of land is woven through them.

This specific lecture is by Troy Vettese, an environmental historian and a William Lyon Mackenzie King post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University. He is going to discuss the trade-offs between environmental policies and how this links to the problem of land scarcity.

You can find more information and register to attend here: https://www.aaschool.ac.uk/publicprogramme/whatson/designing-the-half-earth

2. RIBA: Barrow House Project Spotlight (3rd)

The Humber Architectural Association invites you to join ID Architecture’s project spotlight on Barrow House in Lincolnshire, which recently won the readers' vote for the Yorkshire region in RIBAJ's Best on Show competition. You can join to listen how the project got through planning as Paragraph 55 and discover the details behind the innovative design, including stunning drone footage.

3. Design Dialogues: Healthy Building and the Workplace (16th)

The COVID-19 pandemic puts health and safety in homes and workplaces to the test. Improved ventilation and sanitation have taken on special urgency among the many performance aspects of building design. A panel discussion will present examples of office towers being adapted for safe re-occupancy, such as Chicago’s 150 North Riverside, and explain the growing use and relevance of the WELL Building Standard (a certification akin to LEED for energy efficiency) in the healthy buildings movement.
